Fundus Autofluorescence (FAF)

This relatively new imaging modality utlilzes blue wavelength laser illumination and special light filters to image the auto-fluoresence of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). This can be helpful in imaging and following RPE atrophy, as well as pre-atrophic areas of RPE dysfunction. This has been found useful in monitoring patients for Plaquenil toxicity, as well as in imaging geographic atrophy in patients with dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD); the latter indication will be especially useful in monitoring the response of new drugs being developed to slow the progression of dry AMD.
